Why Tierra Madre?

Waldorf Education is more than just an alternative. It truly offers a new paradigm in education. We promote and actualize social and ecological healing in all that we do.

What distinguishes Tierra Madre School from other schools? The tip of the iceberg includes…

DEVELOPMENTALLY BASED: Childhood is honored and protected. We educate based on what we know to be true about the developing child, not based solely upon state standards.

PLAY CENTERED AND NONACADEMIC: Research shows that children from play based kindergartens have increased concentration, higher vocabularies, better problem solving skills, and more!

“HEAD, HEART, HANDS”: A truly holistic education that engages a child’s unfolding cognitive, social, emotional, and physical capacities in every activity and at each age.

MOVEMENT AND “SENSORY MOTOR” RICH: Sensory motor development is the foundation from which all life long learning grows, and thusly lies at the foundation of Waldorf Education.

IMAGINATION AS THE FOUNDATION FOR CREATIVE THINKING: Waldorf Education uses creative, imaginative thinking in the young child to foster the critical thinking skills its graduates are known to possess.

REVERENT: Respect and reverence for all of creation is practiced in every aspect of the school day. Even our crayons, made from beeswax, receive respect and care.

NATURE BASED: We play outside in all weather, visit local farms and the bosque routinely, sing songs and hear stories about the natural world, and celebrate the seasons in community festivals.

A BRIDGE BETWEEN HOME AND THE WORLD: Parents and teachers are truly partners, working together with shared values.

MEDIA CONSCIOUS: It is nearly impossible to be “media free” in today’s world. We can be conscious about how we use, or don’t use, media in our lives. Screen media in particular has a host of negative affects on the developing child. We limit or eliminate our media use as we learn together about its affects.

OUR GRADUATES: Research over generations shows that Waldorf grads are known for their big picture and creative thinking, moral development, their ecological and social consciousness, their self esteem, and yes, over 90% attend and complete higher schooling.

A picture, however, is worth a thousand words. Stepping into our classrooms, so full of beauty and wonder in the early years is the best way to see and feel the differences Waldorf has to offer your family.
